In the past time, the global average temperature has increased at the fastest rate.
According to the NOAA 2019 Global Climate Summary, Since 1880, the average temperature of land and ocean has increased at an average rate of 0.07°C per decade; however, since 1981, the average growth rate has risen to 0.18°C, which is more than twice than the previous rate. So, the experts see that this trend is accelerating, growing faster and faster every year. Global warming is part of climate change and refers to a long-term accumulation process. It is caused by the continuous accumulation of the greenhouse effect, resulting in an imbalance in the energy absorbed and emitted by the earth-atmosphere system. So, as energy continues to accumulate in the earth atmosphere system, it will lead to an increase in temperature and cause climate change to become more terrible. Global warming is mainly due to the people burning fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and cut down forests or trees, etc. When it is burned, it will produce a large amount of carbon dioxide which is greenhouse gas. These greenhouse gases are highly transparent to visible light from solar radiation, and are highly absorptive to the long-wave radiation emitted by the earth, and can strongly absorb the ground radiation. Infrared rays cause the earth’s temperature to rise, the greenhouse effect. Global warming will redistribute global precipitation, melt glaciers and frozen soils, and rise in sea levels. It will not only endanger the balance of natural ecosystems but also threaten the survival of life on earth and even humans. On the other hand, due to land-based greenhouse gas emissions, the temperature on the continent has risen and the temperature difference with the ocean has become smaller. As a result, the airflow slows down, and the smog cannot be blown away in a short time. This has led to an increase in haze weather in many different countries, affecting human health.
Newspaper
From the New York Times newspaper, the scientists say that global warming has caused
serious effects in the Arctic. This has caused the Arctic to start changing to another kind of climate which is characterized by reduced snow and ice, open water, and more rainfall. The purpose of this article is to tell those who follow news or like to read newspapers (usually older people) about the severity and destructiveness of global warming to the Arctic, but if people can change the emissions, then people can still change the development speed of the Arctic. So, it indicates that global warming can be ameliorate, as long as people can make some changes. But this requires everyone, not just one or two people which people must be aware of the seriousness of global warming and the destructive effects for the entire planet. For example, “We still have
an opportunity to change how rapidly the Arctic evolves, she said, if we end up changing our emissions. You can’t just give up. If you work hard and make some changes there’s a possibility you’d have some dramatic effects.” from The Arctic Is Shifting to a New Climate Because of Global Warming. This quote illustrates that even if the melting of those glaciers accelerates, this part of the melting may still take centuries. So people always have the opportunity to change this situation. Furthermore, the temperature rises which causes the glacier to melt which causes the sea-level rise. Global warming does not only affect humans, it affects the entire ecosystem and environment. According to The Arctic Is Shifting to a New Climate Because of Global Warming,
it shows that the continuous melting of ice and polar ice caps will increase the amount of water in the ocean and cause the sea level to rise. The rising sea levels will make the land area decrease. The audience of this article is the people who will always read the newspaper, follow the news frequently, or the people who are concerned about global warming. But in some ways, Articles published in newspapers can be regarded as propaganda, so it may be seen by some unintentional people. The tone of this newspaper is an optimistic tone of formality. It did not exaggerate which did not talk about the trend that the matter was so serious that it could not be retained. On the contrary, This newspaper encouraged people to make changes to improve the
current condition. This is because the author has been emphasizing that we still have
opportunities to improve this bad situation. In addition, the existing drainage system and irrigation system will become obstructed and scrapped. Urban buildings in earthquake-prone areas will be more prominent. The genre of this article is a written newspaper of publication because it posts on the New York Times newspaper website. So, this is a hidden advertisement, because the people on the street or people who like to read may see it. The stance and language of this article are aimed at the effects of global warming caused by the melting of glaciers which is how speakers position themselves about the ongoing interaction.
Social media post
Over time, scientists have gained more detail in understanding the consequences of
global warming. The purpose of this article is to tell people about the in-depth information and the impact of global warming. If the current trend continues, it will have an impact on the environment, economy, and health. Such as disruption of habitats or the effects for forests, farms, and cities. According to Global Warming 101it says “Forests, farms, and cities will face troublesome new pests, heat waves, heavy downpours, and increased flooding. All those factors will damage or destroy agriculture and fisheries. Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and Alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction.” This quote shows that almost all the living things and even plants will get affected because of climate change. The audience of this article is the people who like to use social apps (usually young people) or the people who care about animals and the environment. It is because most young people will have Instagram which is a way to socialize. In addition, this website(NRDC) is a 501 non-profit organization in the United States which is an international environmental advocacy group. The tone of this article is concise and ironic, the opposite of what is meant. For example “Everything you wanted to know about our changing climate but were too afraid to ask.” from Global Warming 101. This quote demonstrates that climate changes are not optimistic for now. The genre of this article is a media post because the information presented in this article is through questions and answers. This is a good way to tell people about global warming. In today’s society, the most common thing for people is to use their phones and they will carry them wherever they go. So this greatly increases the chances of this social media post being seen, and people can share it with friends or post it on different social platforms. The stance of this article is the attitude that the writer has towards the current situation of global warming and the solution. Thus, global warming will cause many problems and even threaten the ecological environment of humans.
Scholarly source
The purpose of this article is to introduce the readers to the government’s emphasis on
global warming and its severity and destructiveness for the earth which the most important thing is to let the reader understand what he wants to achieve and why. In this article, the author used many professional terms to tell information about global warming. The readers of this article are students because reading this is like reading a textbook because the language is logical and the writing technique and framework are clear. Also, there may be other authors that will use it as a source of reference to learn from. From the article, it shows the temperature is getting higher each year because of global warming. The damage of global warming has exceeded 10 billion U.S. dollars in the year of 2016. For example, “If global GHG emissions are not reduced, heat waves will affect 74% of the world’s population by 2100. Even with drastic GHG reductions, almost half of humans will face deadly heat.” from Climate Change and the Individual. This quote shows that if people still can’t change to help improve the climate, then more problems will show up as the years pass by. The tone of this article is persuasive and everything is based on the fact that it shows lots of data. So, this article accurately expresses global warming information and reflects the scope and depth of the research. The genre of this article is an academic report on global warming because there is innumerable information about climate in this article. The author is very detailed, and also discussed many other things about global warming. This article has divided chapters and uses diagrams to make the reader intuitive. And isolate the details, highlight the key points which is a great resource for writing articles for students. The stance of this article is to tell people that global warming may change the
environment on earth.
Magazine
The purpose of this article is to explain the effect of current disasters, such as pandemics, famines, and global warming to the people who follow the magazine; people may also see this magazine when they go to the bathroom because some people like to read things when they go to the bathroom. By seeing this magazine, people will realize the current situation on the earth in which the temperature goes higher every year because of global warming. The tone of this article is calamitous and Urgent insistent that saying something must be done soon. According to What Climate Alarm Has Already Achieved it says, “One plague, when big enough, occludes others, and the coronavirus pandemic has, for six months now, almost fully eclipsed the very real, very large, and very pressing threat of climate change.” This quote shows that this epidemic almost conceals the fact of climate change which is very huge and urgent. The author uses an urgent tone because there are still many people who do not know global warming, and some even suspect that it is fake. From this article, the author shows that if the planet’s carbon footprint is not completely eliminated, it will never disappear. People may have lived forever in this deadly new era of climate change. This is a pessimistic and strict attitude towards global warming, and he did not encourage people to make improvements. But he put the facts in front of readers to make those who read this magazine realize the seriousness and irreparable consequences. The genre of this article is a magazine of publication which describes the disasters for now and in the future. The stance of this article is to let people have a sense of crisis and understand current disasters.
Sources similar or different
These articles let people have a sense of danger to global warming, which can be guarded in the future. They all wrote about the many problems caused by weather changes that
endangered the entire planet. Moreover, they use description, explanation, and evaluation to reveal the persuasive motivations of discourse builders to the audience hidden behind metonymic choice. The authors did not use abbreviations or shorthands (including social media post). These articles should use relatively formal sentences, even in a more lyrical and brisk style. The difference between these articles has different methods and formats. They use different perspectives for analysis and evaluation, so this expands the audience; So this helps authors get attention from different readers by different age groups and classes to these articles. Also, the information discussion points are a little different because some articles will be mixed with other information and materials.
Conclusion
These authors decided to write about the subject of global warming probably because
they were aware of his seriousness. And hope to call on more people to understand and make changes. Authors of different articles have different moods, and their writing methods are also different. Some are pessimistic, some are optimistic and encourage people to try their best to improve the ecology of the planet. In addition, because they are different genres and rhetorical situations in which their intonation or words are also different. But the themes and goals are the same, they all tell readers about global warming. Although the authors provided information about global warming, they did not write about how to improve specifically. So the following is what I learned from other websites that people can also help cope with climate change in their daily necessities. For example, driving one less car and eating less meat are all contributing to alleviating global warming. Even if it is a little change, if everyone can change, it will be a great improvement in global warming. Although vehicles are an indispensable tool in modern society, it cannot be vehicles that should not be taken to the streets in response to climate change. But people can drive as few private cars as possible and choose to take public transportation. When there is sufficient natural light in the room, you can also try not to turn on the lights. These practices not only help save energy and reduce emissions but can also reduce electricity bills and save money. Last, global warming is a big thing that everyone should try to help and get involved in.
